Teaching the non-science major how to teach science is a challenge! No matter what science course is being taught, professors must model good teaching strategies that promote an inquiry approach that incorporates prior knowledge, connections, a social environment, relevance, and time to actively construct new understandings of scientific concepts

Abundance and Identification of the Leafmining Guild on Apple in the Mid-Atlantic States

    Get PDF
The leafmining guild on apple in the northeastern United States was studied from 1983 to 1988. Ten species of leafminers, all Lepidoptera, were encountered during the sampling. Phyllonorycter spp. (P. blancardella and P. crataegella) were the most ubiquitous and most abundant throughout the region. Lyonetia speculella was also abundant in both managed and unmanaged orchards, indicating a potential to become a pest. Bucculatrix pomiloliella and Coptodisca splendorilerella were abundant in unmanaged orchards, but were only rarely found in managed orchards. Coleophora serratella, Stigmella pomivorella, Parornix geminatella, Tischeria malifoliella, and Recurvaria nanella were also found. A key to the most important leafminer species on apple in the mid-Atlantic states, based on leafmine characteristics, is presented

Reduced gravity fecal collector seat and urinal

    Get PDF
A waste collection system for use in a reduced gravity including a seat having an opening centrally located with a pair of opposed depressed valleys on opposite sides of said opening for accommodating the ischial tuberosities of a user. The seat has contoured surfaces for providing support of the user's body and includes a prominent ridge towards the rear, which provides forward-aft positioning cue to the user. A curved recess is provided adjacent the forward portion of the seat for accommodating a tubular urinal having an enlarged open mouth

    Half-BPS SU(N) Correlators in N=4 SYM

In this note we study half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills for gauge group SU(N) at finite N. In particular we elaborate on the results of hep-th/0410236, providing an exact formula for the null basis operators algorithmically constructed there. For gauge groups U(N) and SU(N) we show that this basis is dual to the basis of multi-trace operators with respect to the two point function. We use this to extend the results of hep-th/0611290 concerning factorisation and probabilities from U(N) to SU(N). We also give a construction for a separate diagonal basis of the SU(N) operators in terms of the higher Hamiltonians of the complex matrix model reduction of this sector.Comment: LaTeX, 15 pages; comments added on large N limi

Changes in the chloride content of ground water in Pinellas County, Florida between 1947 and 1956

    Get PDF
In December 1956 the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Florida Geological Survey and the Board of County Commissioners of Pinellas County, collected waterlevel and chloride content of water in 94 wells in Pinellas County. First sampled in 1947, resampling and reanalyzing the water from these wells was used to determine the change in the chloride content of the ground water from 1947 to 1956. The chloride content of ground water is generally a reliable indication of the contamination of ground water by sea water, as 90 percent of the dissolved solids of sea water are chloride salts.
